Purple Saturdays Movement Responds to Recent UNAMA Report on Killings and Disappearances of Former Soldiers by Taliban The Purple Saturdays movement has responded to the publication of a recent report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) regarding the killing and disappearance of at least 800 former soldiers by the Taliban, stating that the report is “incomplete.” In a statement released on Wednesday, August 22nd, the Purple Saturdays movement stated that it has been seriously investigating human rights violations against former security forces through its committee for supporting former soldiers. Based on this investigation, the movement believes that the published report by UNAMA is not comprehensive. The movement further added that over the past two years, the Taliban has detained and unjustly killed a significant number of former soldiers in various parts of the country, particularly in Kabul, Parwan, Panjshir, Kapisa, Baghlan, Badakhshan, Takhar, Balkh, Jowzjan, Faryab, Kandahar, and Herat, without any charges. According to the statement, the UNAMA report reflects only a small portion of the crimes committed against the country’s former security and defense forces by the Taliban. The statement also mentioned that in many cases, the Taliban has not handed over the bodies of the former soldiers to their families and has refrained from providing details about the fate of the detained soldiers. This comes as UNAMA has published a report stating that the organization has documented at least 218 cases of extrajudicial killings of officials and members of former security forces by the Taliban. During this period, the organization has documented a total of at least 800 cases of extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, torture, and enforced disappearances of officials and soldiers of the previous government.
